Is Acne Laser Therapy painful?

Your Acne Laser Therapy shouldn’t be “painful”, however, some patients will find it slightly irritating. Many of our patients will compare the sensation to being snapped by a rubber band over and over, however, your skin should get used to the feeling after a few minutes. We can also offer a topical numbing cream to help alleviate the sensation.

Most patients will require between two and six treatments to see the best results, depending on the severity of their acne. After you come in for your consultation, you will be given a more accurate timeline and the number of sessions you will need. You should begin to notice some of your acne fading within a week or so after just one appointment, but as with any laser treatment, the more you have performed, the better the results are. What is acne laser therapy?

Acne Laser Therapy is a light or laser-based option to help reduce inflammatory acne lesions by targeting some of the main factors that cause acne such as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria and sebaceous (oil) gland activity.

Acne begins when the sebaceous glands become clogged and there is a build-up of acne bacteria called P. acnes. This bacteria build-up causes inflammation and the formation of acne. Acne problems can begin early, even before preteen years, and can continue for some through middle adulthood. For many years, acne sufferers have been forced to rely on topical and oral medications to treat their blemishes, cysts, and inflammation. These medications, such as Accutane and long-term antibiotic therapy, tend to have inconsistent results and many side effects.

IPL Photorejuvenation

IPL Photorejuvenation uses a handheld device to administer high-intensity, intense pulsed light into the dermis without harming the top layer of your skin. Your skin’s pigment absorbs the energy and converts it to heat, eliminating undesirable skin problems like acne, scars, and sun damage.

Since acne typically occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and compromised skin cells, IPL Photorejuvenation heats your hair follicles to destroy the acne-causing bacteria on your skin, and can also treat the skin cells that cause acne’s uneven pigmentation to give you brighter, more even-toned skin. IPL cannot physically erase the indentation caused by acne scars, but many patients find that its brightening is enough to greatly reduce their appearance.

IPL is far less invasive than other procedures, comfortable with no downtime, and covers a larger area of skin, making it more successful in treating multiple skin concerns in one session. Most patients who use IPL for acne need 3-6 treatments spaced about a month apart.

3D Light and Laser Rejuvenation

3D Light and Laser Rejuvenation takes a three-tiered approach to rejuvenating your skin. The first portion of the procedure uses Laser Genesis, which involves controlled heat from a focused beam of laser light that kills bacteria and stimulates your body’s natural collagen production. Laser Genesis also shrinks pores, smooths out skin texture, and reduces discoloration. Next, we use intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, which sends out several wavelengths of pulsing light to improve the color and texture of the skin, especially damage from sun exposure. The last step in the 3D laser facial process is a chemical peel, which involves a chemical solution applied to the face that provides deep exfoliation, removing dull, blemished skin, and revealing the smooth, firm, healthy skin beneath.

You will notice substantial results after just one 3D Light and Laser Rejuvenation treatment, although full results typically take a couple of weeks. For maximized results, you should schedule a series of 2-5 treatments spaced about a month apart.

Blu-U Photodynamic Therapy

BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic therapy is a therapy for acne that does not involve medication. The blue light is used to kill the P. acnes bacteria in your skin which then improves the acne. BLU-U treatments are gentle and generally well tolerated by patients. Unlike some other acne treatments, this procedure can be used alone or along with other topical and oral medications. It can also be used in patients who prefer not to take oral antibiotics to treat their acne.

Most treatments last about 16 minutes, and patients will generally require four treatment sessions to control or clear up their acne for a period of time.
