Introduction to Rosacea

You don’t have to live with embarrassment and discomfort. Soothe and reduce red, inflamed skin with treatment options that improve your overall look and boost your confidence.

What is Rosacea?

At Renu Medispa near Boise, Rosacea is a popular skin condition we offer treatments for. We love helping clients who struggle with chronic skin conditions feel more confident and in control. Rosacea is a skin condition associated with flushing and redness in the face, dry and rough spots, and acne-like breakouts that can be very painful. In the most extreme cases, the skin thickens and begins to show a scar-like bumpy texture.

Unfortunately, rosacea is often misunderstood as “sensitive skin.” However, people who suffer from rosacea know it is much more than sensitivity. This is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that needs to be treated by trained skin professionals. Without proper treatment, the symptoms of rosacea will continue to worsen. Doctors and scientists don’t fully understand the causes or triggers of rosacea, and the symptoms are different for everyone. There are even different types of rosacea that exhibit differently.

  • Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR) is associated with facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels.
  • Papulopustular Rosacea is a type of rosacea that looks more like acne breakouts than other types, and often affects middle-aged women.
  • Rhinophyma Rosacea involves the nose tip, with thicker, reddish skin, prominent blood vessels, and pitting due to prominent pores and scarring.

All of these types of rosacea cause skin irritation, redness, sores, and itching, and even the most mild cases of rosacea can affect one’s quality of life. Our clients talk about feeling frustrated by their lack of success in treating their condition. Many say they avoid social situations and activities they enjoy when they are having a bad outbreak of their rosacea.

Treatment options for rosacea continue to improve and evolve. The same high-tech treatments we use for anti-aging goals can have a dramatic effect on the symptoms of rosacea. Laser treatments can be used to reduce redness and acne-like breakouts.

What are the benefits of a Rosacea treatment?

Rosacea treatments in the Boise area have helped our patients enjoy the following benefits:

  • Help you feel more comfortable
  • Improve your self-confidence and quality of life
  • Prevent rosacea from worsening
  • Treats other skin conditions such as flushing, broken capillaries, and acne-like breakouts

Treating your rosacea may also improve your mental health. Research studies have shown that the constant redness, acne-like breakouts, and other signs of rosacea can lower a person’s self-esteem. People often say that they feel embarrassed by their skin, with some even trying to avoid contact with other people as much as possible because they feel ashamed. This treatment can help renew your confidence.

Who are the best candidates for a Rosacea treatment?

Although anyone can develop rosacea during their lifetime, it is most common among these groups:

  • Adults age 30 to 60
  • Women are more susceptible to the condition, especially during menopause
  • People with fair skin
  • Smokers

A good candidate for an Eagle, ID Rosacea treatment are those who have the following characteristics:

  • Do not currently have a tan
  • Keeps a positive attitude throughout treatment and recovery
  • Maintains realistic expectations
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Possess olive or light skin

While laser treatment can also be used on darker skin, these patients may experience pigment alternations. In this case, your provider will adjust the settings of the device and perform some spot tests on less visible areas of skin to see how your skin responds.

What to expect on the day of a Rosacea treatment

On the day of your Rosacea treatment in our clinic, your treatment plan is most likely to include a laser or light therapy if rosacea has caused, such as visible blood vessels or thickened skin. Your provider will use a laser treatment such as BroadBand Light or the IPL Photorejuvenation to reduce, and even potentially get rid of the blood vessels. Laser treatments can also reduce redness. In a few small studies, lasers were used to treat permanent redness on the face or the redness surrounding acne-like blemishes. Some patients saw a considerable reduction in redness. Most patients, however, had about a 20% reduction in redness.

Rosacea treatment recovery

In general, you may notice some improvements in your skin after just one treatment, but full results are commonly seen four to six weeks after the third treatment. During this time, your provider will view your before and after photos with you, and many of our patients are often surprised when they see how much their skin has improved.

Since rosacea is a chronic condition that progresses with sun exposure and age, laser treatments are not permanent. As visible capillaries and redness continue to appear, having a laser treatment every one to two years will lessen the appearance of those symptoms.
