Melasma Treatments

Melasma is a hereditary condition caused when the color pigments in the skin are over-productive meaning they do their jobs too well. People of color have more active “melanocytes” than people with lighter skin, so that explains why the condition is more prevalent in North African, African-American, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, or Mediterranean populations. Melasma is believed to be hormone-related since both pregnancy and oral contraceptives seem to make women more prone to melasma.

Certain people with melasma experience brown or gray-brown spots most commonly around areas of the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Some people do see patches on the forearms or neck. Thankfully, most people don’t report any pain with the patches, but of course, would prefer not to have the appearance of blotches.
